Retired railway clerk jailed for taking Rs 100 bribe 32 years ago

LUCKNOW: Retired railway officer jailed after 32 years for taking a hundred rupees bribe. Ram Narayan Verma, who was a railway clerk, was convicted. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 against him. The punishment was given by the special court in Lucknow.

The court did not accept the argument of the defense that Ram Narayan's age should be considred and time should be reduced. The court also rejected the argument that he spent two days in jail in the case. Special CBI judge Ajay Vikram Singh, who heard the case, opined that commutation would send a wrong message to the society.

The incident in took place in 1992. The case is that Ram Narayan demanded a bribe for conducting a medical examination. The case was filed by retired loco driver Ram Kumar Tiwari. Medical examination was required to get pension. The complaint was that when Ram Narayan was approached for this, he demanded a bribe of Rs 150. According to the complaint, Ram Narayan finally gave in for Rs 100. Later, Verma was caught red-handed by the CBI while accepting bribes. Verma was found guilty by the court in November 2022.
