UP Govt announces judicial probe in deaths of Atiq Ahmed and brother; prohibitory orders clamped

NEW D ELHI: The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a judicial inquiry on the deaths of Atiq Ahmed, a Samajwadi Party MP and his brother, arrested by the police in the Umesh Pal murder case. A three-member judicial commission is investigating the incident.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called a high-level meeting in connection with the murder. In the wake of the incident, prohibitory orders have been announced in UP. Internet has been disconnected in Prayagraj. There is a high alert in Kanpur. DGP and senior police officials have left to Prayagraj. 17 policemen who were with Atiq have been suspended after the incident.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead while they were being taken for medical examination in Prayagraj. Visuals of the incident show Atiq and his brother walking while talking to the media when someone shot the two on their heads. Lovelesh Tiwari, Sunny and Arun Mauravya were arrested in the incident. The shooters came disguised as reporters. They chanted slogans Jai Shri Ram.

Atiq is accused in about 100 criminal cases. Umesh Pal, a witness in the 2005 murder case of the then BSP MLA Raju Pal, and two security personnel were shot dead outside their house in Dhoomanganj, Prayagraj on February 24.
