PALAKKAD: Suresh Kumar, a village field assistant, arrested while accepting bribe, led a very simple life. He neither owned a car nor a two-wheeler. He told police that he kept the money to construct a house of his own.
Suresh Kumar told police that he did spend much of his salary as he was a bachelor. Apart from Rs 35 lakh, fixed deposits certificates of Rs 45 lakh and 17 kg of coins were seized from his room. Vigilance informed that he did not withdraw money from his salary account. Presently he has a balance of Rs 25 lakh in his salary account.
The vigilance said he used to accept anything as bribe. Apart from money, ten shirts in unopened covers, mundus, kudampuli in sacks, ten liters of honey, crackers and bundles of pens were also recovered from his room. He lived on a monthly rent of Rs 2500. The residents nearby said he used to go out without even locking his room so that no one would get suspicious.
This is the first time the vigilance got a complaint against him. He had also accepted bribes in the village offices he had worked earlier, but no one had filed a complaint. Suresh will be produced in the Thrissur Vigilance Court today. Most probably the vigilance will file a plea for his custody today.
