KOLLAM: Dr E A Ruwais, accused in the suicide of Dr Shehna, a post graduate student of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, has been taken into custody. He was arraigned in the case yesterday. He was taken into custody from his house in Karunagapally. A case was registered against him with abetment of suicide and under the Dowry Prohibition Act. The police said they decided to take him into custody after interrogation.
‘Everyone wants money, money is bigger than everything,’ Dr Shehna’s suicide note said. Her relatives complained that she took the drastic step after Dr Ruwise, who studied with her, and his family demanded a huge dowry. Medical college circle inspector P Harilal reached her home and collected the statement of her mother and sister.
Dr Ruwais had approached them with the marriage proposal. The two were in a relationship. Her family was not able to give the huge dowry demanded by them and so the groom’s family had called off the wedding. Her brother told police that Shehna was mentally devastated after that. He said they were willing to give property worth Rs 50 lakh, 50 sovereigns or a car. However, he complained that they asked 150 sovereigns, an acre, a BMW car and cash of Rs 1.5 crore. The doctor's father demanded more dowry. The son also yielded to his father's insistence and this happened three months ago.
The police will be checking Shehna's mobile phone. The chats of both will be examined. Shehna, a PG student of surgery department in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and a native of Venjaramoodu was found dead in her flat on Monday night. She took her life after injecting a heavy dose of anesthesia. Shehna's mother will file a complaint with the DGP today demanding a top-level investigation.
Minister Veena George directed the director of women and child development department to investigate and submit a report.
