Four-year-old's wrong surgery; Family files complaint

kozhikode

KOZHIKODE: The family of the four-year-old girl has filed a complaint with the police regarding the incident at a medical college where a surgical operation went wrong. After treatment, the child has been discharged from the hospital.

The superintendent of the medical college informed that action would be taken against the doctor responsible for medical malpractice. The operation was intended to remove a sixth finger on the child's hand. The health minister has requested a report on the incident and further action will be taken based on that report.

A family from Madurai Bazar, Cheruvannur had the distressing experience. The child was taken to Kozhikode Medical College this morning for surgery because her sixth finger was getting stuck in her hair and causing injury. After the surgery, the child's relatives noticed cotton in her mouth and inquired with the nurse. They were shocked to find that the sixth finger was still present.

The family members claim that when they asked the nurse about the surgery on the hand, she laughed and said it was already done. It was only after the relatives insisted that the surgery was meant for the hand that the doctor realized the mistake. The doctor admitted the error, apologized and promptly performed another operation to remove the sixth finger.

Initially, the superintendent of the medical college stated that there was a lump in the child's throat, which necessitated surgery on the tongue to remove it. However, the relatives insisted that the child did not have any such problem and had come only for the hand surgery.
