THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The search for Joy, a labourer who went missing after falling into the Aamayizhanjan canal, continues with extensive efforts from multiple rescue teams. Despite the challenges posed by garbage accumulation and difficult conditions, the operation proceeds with determination.
Scuba team faces challenges
"The garbage is as tall as two people and it gets worse further in. We can barely stand on our knees. Coming out of the tunnel takes all our energy," said S.P. Anu, a member of the scuba team.
A 100-member fire force team, including 19 scuba divers, is on the scene. Teams from Rajaji Nagar, Chakkai, Parassala, Vizhinjam, Kallambalam, Varkala and Attingal are participating in the rescue operations. The scuba team, equipped with modern apparatus, has conducted over 10 inspections. Each oxygen cylinder lasts for 50 minutes underwater, but the tunnel's conditions reduce this time to 40 minutes.
Advanced equipment deployed
The scuba team uses oxygen cylinder masks, breathing air compressors, gas detectors, portable microphones, large ropes and powerful underwater torches. These tools enable communication and navigation within the tunnel.
NDRF and robot assistance
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the operation with a 20-member team supporting the fire brigade. Genrobotics Innovation’s Bandicoot robot and another robot equipped with night vision cameras were deployed for garbage removal and search efforts.
Medical and municipal support
Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has established an emergency red zone equipped with ICU systems and special medical teams ready to provide expert treatment. Kaniv 108 ambulances with oxygen support and basic life support systems are on standby. Swimmers receive prophylactic medications, including doxycycline.
A 72-member municipal sanitation team is aiding in garbage removal. Municipal Secretary and Mayor are coordinating the efforts on-site.
