Summer is here and tender coconut sellers have become a common sight in the streets. Many people think that buying tender coconut water is a lot better than those bottled drinks sold in shops. However, the reality is that the roadside coconuts are not as pure as we think.

Most of the tender coconuts in Kerala come from Palakkad and Pollachi. In order to get more yield, farmers continue to use the banned aluminum phosphide. A hole of two inches depth is made in coconut trees and then two tablets of highly toxic aluminum phosphide will be added into it. The hole will then be filled with soil.

The results will be visible within a month. These are widely used to increase water content in coconuts and to prevent damages in bunches. The shocking news came out during an investigation conducted by Kaumudy TV’s ‘Nerkkannu’.
