UDF-backed independent candidate, who won bypolls, attacked by goons, suffers broken arm, leg

ALAPPUZHA: UDF-backed independent candidate GS Baiju, who won the by-election, was attacked by goons on Thursday night. The attack took place in the Kalappattu area in Kallumood around 8.45 pm. Baiju had won from Muthukulam 4th Ward in Alappuzha.

Residents of the area said that the attack was carried out by a group on three bikes carrying weapons including rods. Baiju was seriously injured on his head, right leg and left arm and was admitted to a private hospital in Haripad. An emergency surgery was performed on his broken arm and leg.

GS Baiju contested as an independent candidate backed by UDF after resigning from the BJP. After winning the election, he was on his way to meet UDF workers when he was attacked. Baiju was elected with a majority of 103 votes.

At the same time, the UDF has made huge progress in the local by-elections. The UDF won nine seats from the LDF and the BJP and also rose to power at Keerampara Panchayat in Ernakulam. Out of 29 seats, UDF won 15, LDF won 12 and BJP won two seats.
