NEW DELHI: Union Law Minister Kiran Rijiju on Thursday said that the Supreme Court should not consider bail pleas or frivolous PILs as a large number of cases are pending. The minister made the controversial statement amid his ongoing war of words with the Supreme Court. He made the statement in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on the Bill to rename the New Delhi International Arbitration Center as the Indian International Arbitration Centre.

Kiran Rijiju's new statement comes after he courted controversy by criticizing the appointment of Supreme Court judges. "If the Supreme Court starts considering bail petitions and frivolous PILs, it will create a lot of additional liability. More than four crore cases are pending in the trial courts. The government provides money and support to create better infrastructure. But the judiciary should be asked to ensure that only deserving people get justice," he said.

Meanwhile, the opposition and lawyers lashed out at the Union Minister over the statement.
