KOTTAYAM: A 23-year-old youth has been jailed for five-years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh has been imposed for causing the death of three women. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to undergo one more year in jail. The incident happened on March 4 in 2019. The Kottayam additional sessions judge Sanu S Panicker pronounced the verdict against Shaun Mathew of Peroor Mulloor, who drove the car which led to the accident on the bypass road of Poovathummoodu in Ettumanoor.

Leji (45), wife of Biju residing in Kavumpadom Colony, and daughters Annu (20) and Nainu (16) were those dead in the accident. The accident happened when the three were on their way to buy birthday gift for Nainu. The over speeded car coming from Ettumanoor fatally knocked down the three. In the impact, the three fell ten kilometers away. Annu’s leg was severed in the accident.

The car that hit the three went and stopped after ramming onto a tree in a plot near the road. The car was completely damaged in the accident. Though the locals tried to rush the seriously injured to the hospital, none of the vehicles stopped. They were later carried in a goods auto.
