Shyju's selfless act, donates kidney to save a life

THRISSUR: A chance meeting between Anthikad native Leela and Shyju Sairam, who runs a bakery product manufacturing unit, led to an unexpected offer of kindness. Leela had approached Shyju seeking financial aid for her nephew's kidney treatment. However, he surprised her by offering to donate one of his kidneys instead. Initially sceptical, Leela soon realized that Shyju's words were genuine, and his selfless act proved to be a lifesaving blessing for her ailing nephew.

Shyju Sairam, a native of Pullu in Anthikkad, Thrissur, donated his kidney to Sumesh (42) from Ambedkar Nagar in Anthikkad. The surgery took place on November 18th at Lisie Hospital in Ernakulam. Both the donor and the recipient are currently recovering.

In April 2022, Leela approached Shyju's establishment seeking help for Sumeesh. The next day, the doctors conducted tests to see if Shyju's kidney would be compatible with Sumeesh, and the results were positive. However, further tests conducted as part of the surgery revealed a lump in Sumeesh's liver. Meanwhile, Shyju's wife and friends tried to persuade him to back out. However, Shyju stood firm in his decision to donate his kidney, and eventually, his wife Sanitha and children Nandana and Sai Krishna rallied around him, offering their support.

Sumeesh's friends and well-wishers came together to raise funds for the surgery by organizing a collection drive and a musical concert at Triprayar. Sumeesh's wife is Sharanya, and they have a son named Thridev.
