Mexico register first win of FIFA World Cup 2026, defeat South Africa 2-0

MEXICO CITY: The 23rd FIFA World Cup got off to an exciting start as the ball rolled and teams began their quest for glory. Co-host Mexico recorded the first victory of the tournament, defeating South Africa 2-0.

In the match played at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium, Mexican forward Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the World Cup in the ninth minute. Mexico added another goal later to secure a comfortable win.

In another match played earlier in the day, South Korea came from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1. The Koreans recovered after conceding the opening goal and went on to claim all three points.
