TOKYO: A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck central Japan early Sunday morning, leaving at least 20 people injured and causing light structural damage across several prefectures.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the tremor occurred at 1:04 a.m. local time, centred in western Shizuoka Prefecture at a depth of roughly 40 kilometres. Shaking was felt broadly across central Japan, registering up to an upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in Chita, Aichi Prefecture. Strong tremors were also recorded in neighbouring Nagano and Gifu prefectures. Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued.

Most of the reported injuries occurred during the initial shaking or during subsequent evacuations. Local fire and emergency services reported that residents sustained cuts from fallen items and shattered glass, while several others were hurt in falls as they attempted to leave buildings. Emergency crews are continuing structural safety checks to confirm that no individuals are trapped inside damaged properties.

Property damage was mostly confined to broken windows, cracked walls, and fallen storefront displays. Transport operators placed Shinkansen bullet trains on reduced speed limits through the affected regions while maintenance teams inspected tracks for potential displacement.

The JMA warned residents across the affected prefectures to remain prepared for potential aftershocks over the coming week, particularly during the next two to three days. Government liaison teams are monitoring the region and coordinating with local officials.
