
KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress leader and MP Abhishek Banerjee faced an attack from a mob in Sonapur in South 24 Parganas district. Banerjee was on his way to meet party workers who were victims of post-poll violence after the elections. Abhishek Banerjee was thrown eggs and slippers while his shirt was ripped apart. Officials asked him to wear a cricket helmet to escape unhurt from the mob.
Abhishek Banerjee was on his way to visit the house of a slain Trinamool worker. The mob that gathered at Abhishek and shouted slogans of "chor, chor" (thief, thief) and attacked him. Abhishek Banerjee alleged the role of BJP behind the attacks. "They are trying to kill me", he said while protesting to not leave the place until the police send more forces and provide protection to the families of the victims.
Meanwhile, the BJP Bengal unit denied the allegations. State president Samik Bhattacharya said that the BJP had no role in the attack. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the attack on Abhishek Banerjee.
