
DISPUR: Five Air Force personnel were killed in a fire-related crash in Assam. The Air Force has confirmed the death of Squadron Leader Prashant Singh, Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, Sergeant Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat and Agniveervayu Danish Alam. Only the co-pilot survived.
The accident happened in Assam’s Jorhat Air Force Base in Assam this morning. The AN-32 transport aircraft crashed. The aircraft lost control after landing and burst into flames in an open area near the runway in Jorhat. The Air Force authorities are collecting information about the accident. The Air Force has also ordered an investigation.
Initial reports say that there were six people on board the 45-seat aircraft. The accident occurred during a routine training. The cause of the accident is not clear. Fire force and rapid response teams have been deployed in the area.
The AN-32 is a twin-engine aircraft used for transporting goods for the needs of the army. They were built by Soviet Union for India. It is reported that about 100 such aircrafts are operating as part of the army. They are designed to perform well in any adverse weather conditions. AN-32 aircraft is also widely used for supply drops in remote areas.
