NEW DELHI: BJP leader Smriti Irani has taken an indirect dig at Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi through an AI-generated video shared on X. The video was posted with the argument that the objective of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is to remove fake voters from the voter list.
The AI-generated video features a fictional conversation between Rahul Gandhi and Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan. It draws inspiration from Bachchan's ghost character in the 2008 film Bhoothnath. In the video, a character portrayed as Rahul Gandhi tells a police officer, "Everyone knows that he is dead. Yet, he refuses to accept that he cannot vote. He is twisting the rules."
In response, Amitabh Bachchan's character explains that his name remained on the electoral roll because a corrupt official had failed to issue his death certificate. He also says it is surprising that a political party managed to cast a vote in his name.
The conversation is used in the video to explain the purpose of the SIR exercise. Sharing the video, Irani captioned it: 'You can wake someone who is genuinely asleep, but not someone acting blind just to mislead the nation!"
Smriti Irani shot to national prominence after defeating Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, a Congress stronghold, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, she lost the constituency to Congress candidate K. L. Sharma in the 2024 elections.
Irani has recently returned to an active role in the BJP's national leadership after being appointed as the party's national general secretary. Her appointment came ahead of the Assembly elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
