THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Action is likely against the Cantonment CI and SI for their alleged provocative response to the clashes in the capital city. The City Police Commissioner sought explanations from SI G. Gokul—who behaved inappropriately during a phone call with SFI District Secretary Nandan (an accused in the case)—and SHO Satheesh Kumar, who made a Facebook post that provoked the activists.
An investigation by Special Branch Assistant Commissioner Suresh Babu found that both individuals had committed a serious lapse. Commissioner Dr Arul RB Krishna had previously summoned and reprimanded them.
An explanation was sought from the Sub-Inspector regarding his threatening remarks. A notice was issued to the Circle Inspector for violating Circular No. 45/2015, which outlines the code of conduct for police officers on social media. An inquiry by the Assistant Commissioner of the Special Branch revealed that their behaviour provoked SFI activists and escalated the situation. The report also notes that neither officer possesses sufficient experience working within the City Police. It further stated that it was unsolicited for the police officials to mimic the style of student or youth organisations on social media.
The City Police Commissioner is likely to initiate departmental action after receiving responses from both officers. Meanwhile, a section argues that taking action against the officers would demoralise the police force. The officers are likely to be transferred from the Cantonment station. There is also a view that such action could spark resentment within the force.
Meanwhile, CI Satheesh, who had been on leave, returned to duty by yesterday afternoon. The explanation suggested that the one-day leave was for personal reasons. SI Gokul has been sent to attend a three-day training session to investigate POCSO cases. The CPM and SFI have demanded that both officers be transferred within ten days, declaring that they will otherwise launch an indefinite protest in front of the police station. Narcotic Cell CI B.M. Shafi has been given temporary charge as the Cantonment SHO.
