Comic book writer Viswanathan Nair passes away, famous works include CID Moosa, Boeing Boeing

PALAKKAD: Comic book writer Viswanathan Nair (93) of Kannadi Prabha Mandiram has passed away. He wrote many popular comic books in the 1960s and 70s. He had written almost 123 comic books. Famous works include Irumpukai Mayavi, CID Moosa, CID Mahesh, and Boeing Boeing.


He wrote comic books under the name Kannadi Viswanathan. Most of these were detective stories. His early works were Irumpukai Mayavi, Sarpadweep, and Manjukatta Rahasyam, which were translated from Tamil. His last work was Shoonyakashthile Kshudrajeevi, released in 1983.


He was born in 1932 in Kannadi, Palakkad, to Achuthan Nair, a head teacher at Chungamandam School, and Devaki Amma. After leaving school in the 10th standard, he went to Chennai and worked as a tailor. At the age of 32, he returned to his hometown and started a tailoring shop in the building of Achuthan Book House, Kunnathurmedu. The turning point in Viswanathan's life was when the owner Achuthan asked him if he could translate cartoons for the book house. Phrases like Tamar Pathar are also his creations.


He leaves behind his wife Sharada of Peruvemby Ebanath House. He has two daughters Renuka and Shobha and sons-in-law: Aravindan and Hariprasad. He will be laid to rest at the Chandranagar Electric Crematorium.
