THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two sisters were killed after they were hit by a speeding motorcycle while crossing the road on the Kazhakkoottam-Kovalam bypass at Thiruvallam here on Sunday morning. The motorcycle rider was injured in the accident. The deceased were Shantha, 70, of Idayar Puthanveedu in Thiruvallam, and Vijayamma, 63, of Idayar TC 68/861/4. The accident occurred around 7 a.m. near a petrol pump and the Iron Bridge at Thiruvallam.

The sisters had arrived in the area to travel to Athankarai Dargah in Tamil Nadu. They were crossing the road to reach the Thampanoor bus stand when an Enfield Bullet motorcycle coming from the Kovalam side hit them. The sisters had climbed a small iron staircase from the service road to enter the bypass and were crossing to the other side. Witnesses said they had looked in both directions and ensured that no vehicles were approaching before crossing.

The motorcycle came speeding towards them and struck the sisters. The impact caused both women to fall on the road, hitting their heads.
Local residents rushed them to hospital in a 108 ambulance, but their lives could not be saved. Both suffered severe head injuries.

The injured rider, Aryan, 19, a native of Vizhinjam, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Poonthura police have registered a case against him.

Cremation held on private land

The sisters were cremated on land belonging to a private individual as there was insufficient space to arrange the cremation at the property where their brother Sathyan's house is located. The cremation was held on land provided by Muhammad Sabu, a native of Manacaud Kallattumukku who lives in Bengaluru.

Shantha's husband, Babu, is deceased. Her children are Indulekha, Anil and Chithra. Her sons- and daughters-in-law are Murukan, the late Shashikala and Baiju.
Sabu is Vijayamma's son. Her daughter-in-law is Radhika.
