KOCHI: Kochi City Police have launched an investigation after information from a computer at the headquarters of Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) was allegedly accessed and subsequently shared in WhatsApp groups. The probe will seek to determine whether the incident was the result of a cyberattack or whether the information was leaked through employees of the organisation.
KMRL authorities approached the police after confidential documents, employees’ personal information and details of financial transactions were found to have been circulated.
The complaint stated that a computer and printer in the IT section of the corporate office at the Kaloor Stadium station had been hacked. The documents first surfaced in a group associated with a forum working for the development of Kochi Metro.
Police are preparing to question those who shared the information in the group. It has not yet been confirmed whether information relating to the metro’s Central Control Room, which coordinates its operations, train-signalling technology or the security surveillance network at its stations was among the material leaked.
Officials are concerned that the information could have serious consequences if it reaches foreign agencies or criminal groups.
However, a preliminary assessment by the police suggests that the information leaked so far may not be as sensitive or alarming as indicated in the complaint. The cybercrime team will also be involved in tracing the route through which the information was leaked.
Police may inspect the corporate office on Monday and record the statements of technical experts working on contract with KMRL.
The disclosure of internal Kochi Metro documents has nevertheless raised concern, particularly as the metro system maintains tight security, including during visits by VVIPs.
