Operation Toofan: 368 arrested, large quantities of drugs seized

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala's anti-drug campaign, Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt, is moving forward with strong enforcement measures. In a series of surprise raids conducted across various districts of the state today, 368 people were arrested. The operation is part of the Home Department's strategy to dismantle drug networks operating in Kerala. Authorities are also preparing mobile apps and WhatsApp-based systems to help the public share information about drug-related activities.

A total of 340 cases have been registered across the state within three days since the launch of Operation Toofan on June 2. The operation has led to major drug seizures, including 0.549 kg of MDMA, 16.7931 kg of cannabis, 0.461 kg of hashish oil, and 220 cannabis beedis recovered from the accused. The primary objective of Operation Toofan is not only to make Kerala drug-free but also to identify and cut off the sources of drug supply.

As part of the operation, four special squads have already been deployed in each of Kerala's 84 police subdivisions. Authorities are also planning extensive inspections by involving five states and two Union Territories to prevent interstate drug trafficking.

The government has decided to identify synthetic drug manufacturing units operating in other states and take legal action against those involved in producing, storing, and distributing narcotics. Further investigations and enforcement actions will be carried out with the support of central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (Customs).
