THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala State Electricity Board confirmed temporary power restrictions in the state today. The restrictions will be in place between 6 pm and 12 midnight. The unexpected crisis is due to the increasing power consumption in the state and the shortage of power supply from outside. The monsoon failing to meet expectations in the state led to an increase in power consumption.

This emergency restriction had to be done considering the shortage of electricity supply from power exchanges. Usually, the state depends on the power exchanges to meet the additional demand in the evenings. However, the current inability to purchase electricity has created a major crisis.

The gradual increase in power consumption during peak hours has also worsened the crisis. This year, the state recorded an additional power consumption of 500 to 800 MW during peak hours compared to last year. This increase is due to the increased use of cooling equipment, including air conditioners in homes and institutions.
