HARIPAD: The Kerala Police have registered an attempt-to-murder case against the 19-year-old woman who allegedly threw her newborn baby out of a hospital toilet window shortly after giving birth.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the unmarried woman attempted to kill the infant out of fear of social stigma. Family members were reportedly unaware of her pregnancy.
The incident occurred at approximately midnight on Monday, when the teenager arrived at the Haripad Taluk Hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain. While inside the hospital restroom, she delivered a baby girl and subsequently discarded the infant through the toilet's ventilator window.
The newborn was rushed to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital, where she is currently receiving specialised care in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The mother is also admitted to the same hospital for postpartum treatment.
In a statement recorded by investigators on Wednesday, the woman detailed the events leading up to the incident. She stated that while working at a firm in Ernakulam following her studies, she was in a brief relationship with a man. She further claimed she was oblivious to her pregnancy, believing her symptoms were related to an internal abdominal growth.
Local authorities confirmed that the woman has formally renounced custody of the child, reiterating to the police that she does not want the baby. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
