KOCHI: Former DGP Tomin J. Thachankary, who is out on bail after being convicted in a disproportionate assets case, has moved the High Court seeking permission to travel abroad.

In his interim application, Thachankary said he works as a manager at a gold jewellery firm in Sharjah and would lose his job if he fails to return. He has also stated that he is a partner in an IT company. He has asked for permission to leave the country on October 26, and has submitted details of his employment and travel plans.

Hearing the plea, Justice A. Badharudeen remarked orally that Thachankary had only just been released and that the request could wait for some time. As the state government sought time to file its response, the court posted the matter for November 2.

Thachankary was sentenced to four years in prison in a vigilance case. On the 15th of this month, the High Court suspended his sentence and granted him bail on strict conditions, one of which barred him from leaving India without permission. The Kottayam Vigilance Court had convicted him after finding that he amassed assets worth Rs 30.84 lakh beyond his known sources of income between 2003 and 2007.
