THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rain across the state on Tuesday. A yellow alert has been issued for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad today. Isolated heavy rainfall has been predicted in these areas. Heavy rain refers to rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

A yellow alert has also been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam on October 9.

As part of the Kallakkadal phenomenon, the National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of the possibility of sea incursions along the Thiruvananthapuram coast, from Kappil to Pozhiyoor, due to high waves measuring 0.8 to 1.1 metres from 5:30 PM today until 11:30 PM tomorrow.

The agency has also warned of the possibility of sea incursions along the Kanyakumari coast due to high waves measuring 0.9 to 1.3 metres until 8:30 pm tomorrow as part of the Kallakkadal phenomenon.

Safety directions
1. As there is a possibility of worsening sea conditions, people living in vulnerable areas should relocate to safer places as directed by the authorities.
2. The launching of small boats and fishing vessels into the sea should be avoided during this period.
3. During periods when the Kallakkadal phenomenon and high waves are expected, bringing fishing vessels back to shore can be as dangerous as launching them into the sea. Therefore, both launching and bringing vessels ashore should be avoided when the waves become stronger.
4. Until the National Centre for Ocean Information Services withdraws the warning, all activities centred around beaches, including tourism-related activities, should be completely avoided.
5. Fishing vessels, including boats and small fishing craft, should be securely anchored at harbours. Maintaining a safe distance between vessels can help prevent accidents caused by collisions. The safety of fishing equipment should also be ensured.
6. Travel to beaches and recreational activities in the sea should be completely avoided.
7. Special caution should be exercised as there is a possibility of coastal erosion.
