THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: French fries make many go crazy, and they sell easily among children. Be it restaurants or movie theatres, people enjoy devouring this light food to satiate their appetite. Some people make it a habit to order fries while at home when cravings hit them. However, Dr Varthika Vishwani, a leading cancer specialist in Gurugram, has a different story to tell.

In a video shared on Instagram, the doctor explained the serious side effects of French fries. The doctor points out that French fries, loved by millions, are much worse than smoking. Varthika said that she never allows French fries for her children.

The main culprit is the oil used to make the fries. Restaurants heat the same oil multiple times for profit. The doctor explains that this changes the chemical composition of the oil and increases the amount of trans fats and other toxic compounds in it.

According to scientific studies, some of the components formed in such oil can cause cell damage, liver inflammation, and other health problems. Apart from oil, another major threat is the excess salt and empty calories contained in French fries. The doctor warns that this can lead to high blood pressure in children.

India ranks second in terms of childhood obesity in the world. The doctor credits French fries as one of the villains leading to this. Varthika Vishwani hopes Indian parents will make changes in choosing the food for their children.
