CHENNAI: Renowned Indian filmmaker P Bharathiraja passed away, marking the end of an era in Indian cinema. During a career spanning for more than four decades, he earned the title ‘Iyakkunar Imayam’ (Pinnacle of Directors) for his immense contribution to Tamil filmmaking.

Bharathiraja revolutionized Tamil cinema by moving stories out of studio sets and into real-life locations. His debut film, 16 Vayathinile (1977), ushered in a new wave of rural-based storytelling and changed the direction of Tamil cinema.

He also transformed the visual language of Tamil films. Unlike the heavily stylized cinema of his time, Bharathiraja presented actors with minimal makeup and simple costumes, making his characters appear authentic and relatable. At a time when fair-skinned actresses dominated the screen, he boldly cast darker-skinned women in leading roles, challenging prevailing beauty standards.

Through his films, Bharathiraja frequently addressed social issues, including caste discrimination in Tamil Nadu. His film Vedham Pudhithu, starring Sathyaraj, became a landmark work for its strong criticism of caste-based inequality.

He was also the godfather of newcomers in Tamil films. He introduced or provided breakthrough opportunities to numerous actors and filmmakers. Among those who gained recognition through him were actors Karthik, Janagaraj, Napoleon, and actresses Revathi, Radha, Radhika Sarathkumar, and Vijayashanti. He also helped launch the careers of directors K Bhagyaraj, Manivannan, Manobala, Thyagarajan, and Ponvannan.

Another enduring legacy of Bharathiraja was his direct connection with audiences. He popularized the practice of filmmakers addressing viewers personally, often beginning public statements with the phrase ‘En Iniya Thamizh Makkale’ (My dear Tamil people), a tradition that became closely associated with him.

Bharathiraja's films not only entertained but also reshaped Tamil cinema's aesthetics, storytelling, and social consciousness. His influence will continue to be felt for generations.
