The buzz around the upcoming Tamil film 'Kara' has reached a fever pitch, not just for its lead star Dhanush, but for the casting story behind its leading lady. Director Vignesh Raja (of Por Thozhil fame) recently surprised fans by revealing that the industry’s current favourite, Mamitha Baiju, was not the original choice for the film.
In a recent interview, Vignesh Raja shared that the role was initially offered to Kannada star Chaithra J. Achar. However, a timing conflict regarding the actress’s "look" changed everything.
Chaithra had recently completed the Sasikumar-starrer My Lord. Upon review, it was discovered that her character's appearance in that film was strikingly similar to the aesthetic required for Kara. To avoid appearing repetitive to the audience, Chaithra gracefully opted out.
"I honestly didn't expect Mamitha to accept the role," Vignesh admitted. "Given her massive success in Kerala, we weren't sure if she’d be available, but she expressed immediate interest, and that unexpected 'yes' changed the dynamic of the project."
Mamitha, who transitioned from a ninth-grader in Sarvopari Palakkaran to a household name through Operation Java and Premalu, also addressed the frequent social media criticism regarding the casting of Malayali actresses in Tamil cinema.
Taking a professional stance, she noted:
"As an actor, I want to do diverse roles. Making films across borders and languages is part of my job and my responsibility. When a great opportunity comes in front of me, all I do is seize it."
Release and cast details
Set to hit theaters on April 30, 2026, Kara features a powerhouse ensemble. Alongside Dhanush and Mamitha, the film stars Malayalam veterans Jayaram and Suraj Venjaramoodu, promising a high-octane cinematic experience that blends the best of both industries.
From her breakout performance as Alphonsa in Operation Java to her upcoming role as Selli in Kara, Mamitha Baiju continues to prove that she is a talent that cannot be confined by linguistic boundaries.
