CHENNAI: Bigg Boss is one of the most popular television shows, not just in Malayalam but also in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. The show features a group of contestants living together in a house with no contact with the outside world. The contestant who manages to stay in the house for 100 days becomes the winner. Every moment of their lives inside the Bigg Boss house is shown to the audience, and many incidents from the show often lead to controversies outside. Despite its massive fan following, the show has also faced strong criticism over the years.
Now, the Tamil Bigg Boss, hosted by actor Vijay Sethupathi, has come under fire, with a demand for a ban raised by the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK), an ally of the DMK. TVK leader and MLA Velmurugan made the demand during a press conference on Tuesday, alleging that the show airs bedroom scenes and other content that insults Tamil culture.
Velmurugan said he is not against television programs in general and acknowledged that many shows help promote cultural values. However, he accused Tamil Bigg Boss of broadcasting content that destroys the moral and cultural fabric of Tamil Nadu. “The people who write the show’s script don’t care about the impact it has on Tamil society. For them, only money matters,” he said.
He further pointed out that the show features intimate interactions between contestants, which are not suitable for family viewing, especially for children. “The only thing they haven’t shown yet is actual sexual acts. How can Vijay Sethupathi continue to host such a cheap show just for money?” Velmurugan questioned.
The MLA said he has submitted a request to the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker to introduce a motion against the show. He warned that if the Speaker does not take up the issue or if the Chief Minister and the IT and Broadcasting departments fail to ban the program, he and thousands of women will stage a protest at the Bigg Boss set.
