
KOCHI: A passenger who was standing at the door of the train was attacked by thieves who made off with a gold necklace worth five sovereigns and two mobile phones.
Koratty native Sunil Kumar, an employee of a granite shop in Malikampeedika, North Paravur, was attacked in the incident. The train had just moved when the attackers dragged Sunil down to the platform. He fell onto the platform and lost two teeth. His lip was deeply cut.
The incident took place at 8.14 pm on Monday at platform number 3 of Aluva railway station. Sunil Kumar was on his way to Koratty station on the Ernakulam-Guruvayur passenger. At that time, there were few passengers on the platform. The train only stops for a minute. While he was standing at the doorstep of the front coach, the train started moving. At that time, one of the thieves who came running pulled Sunil Kumar to the platform, slapped him in the face and snatched his gold necklace and mobile phones. Sunil Kumar chased the thieves, but both of them got through.
Since there were few passengers on the train and the platform, no one else was aware of the incident. Sunil Kumar was taken to the hospital by the Railway Police and RPF. The gold necklace is worth Rs 1.60 lakh. One of the mobile phones is worth Rs 20,000. Aadhaar and PAN cards were also stolen.
Sunil Kumar underwent plastic surgery at a private hospital in Angamaly on Tuesday for his lip, which was deeply cut in the incident. The railway police reached the hospital and recorded his statement. There are no CCTV cameras on platform number three. The cameras in the area and on other platforms were checked. Sunil Kumar said that he had previously seen the thieves on the platform two weeks ago.
