THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Transport Minister C P John has said that vehicle modifications in Kerala will be allowed only under certain conditions. He clarified that alterations compromising safety or increasing noise and lighting beyond permissible limits will not be permitted.

“We plan to take several steps regarding vehicle modifications within 100 days. Minor and reasonable modifications may be allowed. However, changes that create excessive noise, use powerful lights, or produce flames will not be permitted. Those who modify vehicles must set their own limits. Mistakes cannot be classified as major or minor. Discussions are still underway regarding the charges to be imposed for approved modifications,” C P John said.

The minister also addressed the recent tipper lorry accident in Kottarakkara, which claimed the lives of a school student and others. He said the Motor Vehicles Department would introduce stricter measures to prevent such accidents.

He said measures such as imposing time restrictions on tipper lorries and taking strict action, including permit cancellations, would be considered. Stronger enforcement is needed to control dangerous driving and improve road safety, he added.

“The Kottarakkara accident occurred at a time when there were no restrictions on tipper lorry movement. Simply extending restrictions by two or three hours will not solve the problem, as drivers may speed during the remaining hours, leading to more accidents. Instead, strict action must be taken. Such accidents can be avoided only when drivers themselves follow safety rules and act responsibly,” the minister said.
