NEW DELHI: Soon after sanctioning high speed Vande Bharat for Kerala, the railways are coming with a Rs 156 crore project to develop Thiruvananthapuram Central Station as the main terminal and Kochuveli and Nemom as sub-terminals.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed at the press meet held at the railway ministry that the project is based on the proposal given by Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan for the railway development of Thiruvananthapuram. V Muraleedharan also attended the press meet.

The earlier announced plans to make the Thiruvananthapuram Central Station world class at a cost of Rs 495 crore and implement development of Varkala station at a cost of Rs 170 crore in view of the Sivagiri pilgrimage, will continue.

The aim is to provide better travel facilities in Thiruvananthapuram city which has many sub-cities. The development of Kochuveli and Nemom as sub-terminals will benefit suburban areas besides reducing the congestion of Thiruvananthapuram Central Station. Thiruvananthapuram Central will be named the first station and Kochuveli and Nemom will be modernized as second and third stations. Trains will be rescheduled as three terminals. A Rs 350 crore project will also be implemented in Kozhikode station.
