‘Lady Singham’ dies in road accident, pre-planned murder, say family

NAGAON: A woman sub inspector of Assam Police known as ‘Lady Singham’ and ‘Dabang Cop’ died in an accident. The dead is Junmoni Rabha (30), sub inspector of Morikolong Police Outpost. Her car collided with a container truck at Sarubhugia village under Jakhalabandha police station of Kaliabor Sub-Division in Nagaon district early Tuesday morning.

Junmoni was alone in the car at the time of the accident and was not in uniform. After receiving information around 2:30 in the morning, the police patrol team reached the spot and took her to a nearby hospital, but her life could not be saved.

Meantime, it is not clear why she went alone to Upper Assam. Her family also has no information about this. Alleging mystery in the incident, the family demanded an investigation. Junmoni's mother Sumitra Rabha said the accident was a pre-planned murder. Junmoni's mother appealed to the chief minister for an honest investigation into her daughter's death, to get justice for her daughter and to punish the culprits. CID will investigate the accident.

Junmoni became famous for taking strong action against criminals. However, she was later in news for financial irregularities. The accident happened hours after a money fraud case was registered against Junmoni. Rs one lakh was seized from her quarters in the raid conducted on Monday night. However, her relatives said that this money belonged to Junmoni's mother which she earned through her small business. The mother asked the police to return this money to perform her daughter's funeral rites.
Assam Director General of Police Gyanendra Pratap Singh said an FIR was registered on Monday against her at North Lakhimpur Police Station under various sections of the IPC such as criminal conspiracy, dacoity, robbery, attempt to cause death, wrongful confinement and extortion.

She was arrested for alleged corruption and was remanded to judicial custody by a court in Majuli district, leading to her suspension. The suspension was lifted later and she rejoined service.

She was entangled in another controversy in January 2022 when her telephonic conversation with BJP MLA Amiya Kumar Bhuyan from Bihpuria constituency was leaked. The two were engaged in an altercation after Rabha had arrested some boatmen for operating country boats with machines fitted illegally and over alleged harassment of the people of Bhuyan's constituency by her.
