Cyber police intensify surveillance

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Cyber police in Kerala are increasing their surveillance efforts due to a recent incident involving the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology called 'Deep Fake'. In this incident, someone used a fake video call to extort money from an individual. The cyber police are now closely monitoring other AI technologies including a chat bot system called Chat GPT which was released by a company called Open AI in 2022.

Chat GPT allows users with a Gmail account to ask questions through a chat window and receive responses that appear to come from a human. However, some criminals are misusing Chat GPT for phishing purposes. They create fake emails that deceive people into revealing their personal information and financial secrets. There is another AI system called Worm GPT, which is less secure than Chat GPT. Fraudsters can use Worm GPT to create malware that can steal information from a person's phone.

The cyber police are also planning to tighten surveillance on YouTube as family vlogs have become popular in Kerala. They are concerned that criminals may use face-changing technologies to deceive and frighten others. For example, some individuals on the American app Omegle pretend to have a knife stuck in their neck and their body covered in blood during video calls. Others pretend to be women and engage in inappropriate conversations before extorting money.

Change passwords often

To protect yourself from cyber threats, experts advise changing passwords frequently especially since an AI technology called PassGen can detect more than half of the passwords used on social media within a minute. Hackers already possess around 70% of commonly used passwords, so it is important not to use the same password across multiple platforms.

Helpline number

If you receive calls from unknown numbers requesting money or encounter any suspicious activity, it is recommended not to respond. Instead, you can contact the helpline number 1930, which is available 24 hours a day, for assistance.
