THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: According to a study report by the Youth Commission, most of those who commit suicide in Kerala are between the ages of 36 and 40. In addition to inherited suicidal tendencies, financial crisis, addiction to alcohol and drugs, depression also led to suicide. The study found that depression was more common in men (8.6 percent) and mood disorders were more common in women (9.9 percent). The report was submitted to the Chief Minister.
The report will be given to employers in the private sector as suicides are on the rise among those working in the unorganized sector. This is a precaution to reduce the mental stress of those employed in this sector. 66 percent of those who committed suicide were not part of social and friendship groups. This is a sign that lack of good friendships and social relationships can damage mental health. The commission has assessed that campaigns and awareness for drug addiction and suicide prevention are focused on people between the ages of 20 and 30 and suicide possibilities in the age group of 35-45 are not being studied.
Based on the findings, the commission will organize a national seminar on January 31 and February 1. Mental health experts will participate in the seminar inaugurated by the Chief Minister. Chairman M. Shajar announced in a press conference that seminars will be organized in districts and universities.
