MALAPPURAM: A person died in an accident while breaking rocks in a well. The deceased is Rajendran (45), a resident of Edappadi in Erode, Tamil Nadu. The incident took place at Perinthalmanna Thekinkod today around 12.45 pm.
The cause of the accident was that Rajendran could not climb out after igniting the explosive to break the rocks in the well. The explosive was used while increasing the depth of a well in Thottoli Noufal's backyard. 10 explosives were placed on the rock inside the well which was about thirty feet deep. As per sources, after setting fire to the rope, Rajendran was more than half way up the rope and fell down. The bystanders tried to save him but could not.
Then the explosive went off and Rajendran was under the ground. There was difficulty saving him as the well was covered in smoke. Perinthalmanna fire force and trauma care workers removed the smoke from the well using a compressor machine used for rock drilling and took Rajendran from the well. But by then he was dead.
The right side of the waist, abdomen and legs were severely injured. The body was shifted to Perinthalmanna District Hospital. A seven-member team including Rajendran came to work at eight o'clock this morning. Rajendran lived near Perinthalmanna fire station with his wife Valli and two children.
