THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prominent urologist Dr. G. Venugopal (68), who performed the first kidney transplant surgery at the Government Medical College in Kerala, has passed away. He was the former head of the urology department at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. He lived in Uthradam near Kochullur Temple Arch. Venugopal was a member of the Changanassery Morkulangara Shanmuga Sadanam family.
Venugopal was undergoing treatment for four years due to liver disease. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram last Monday after the disease worsened. He passed in the afternoon.
Dr. Venugopal was the head of the department when the first kidney transplant in the government sector was performed at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 2012. Venugopal was the person who cleared a new path for kidney transplant surgery in Kerala.
Venugopal retired from service in 2020. He had worked in private hospitals like Ananthapuri, Gokulam, J.J Hospital, Shankars. He completed his MBBS in 1981 from Kottayam Medical College, and completed his MS in Surgery in 1989 and MS in Urology in 1992. He was a member of organizations like IMA, Association of Surgeons of India, Urological Society of India.
Wife. Dr. S. Aruna (Retd. Gynecologist) Son. Dr. Aravind Varun. The funeral was held at Thycaud Shanthi Kavadam.
