
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fr. Dr. Justin Panackal, the legendary composer who crafted the melodies for a handful of Christian devotional songs cherished by Malayalis worldwide, has passed away. He was 90 years old. Fr. Justin had been undergoing treatment for a long period due to age-related ailments and breathed his last at the monastery in Manjummal, Ernakulam district.
The son of Panakkal Job, a native of Kumbalangi, Fr. Justin’s spiritual journey began in 1952 when he joined the Discalced Carmelites, eventually taking Holy Orders in 1962. A scholar of high repute, he completed his master's degree and doctorate in theology in Rome before returning to Kerala in 1969 to serve as a professor at the Mangalapuzha Pontifical Seminary.
Beyond his academic and priestly duties, Fr. Justin left an indelible mark on the world of music. His most famous composition, the timeless "Paithalam Yeshuve" sung by K.S. Chithra, remains a cornerstone of Malayalam devotional music. Throughout his musical career, he composed 29 songs, 25 of which were sung by the legendary K.J. Yesudas. His work was prominently featured in iconic Tharangini albums such as Snehasandesham and Thalirmalyam. His notable repertoire includes beloved tracks like "Manju Pothiyunna," "Snehasworupa Thava," "Daivam Nirupama Sneham," "En Jeevithamam," "Manasathin manivathil," "Navyamamoru kalpana," and "Puthiyoru Pulari Vidarnnu." He also showcased his talent as a lyricist for the song "Jeevitha Garthathil Alayum."
Funeral Arrangements
Fr. Justin Panackal's body will be kept for public viewing at the Manjummal Carmelite Ashram on Monday starting at 7:00 AM. The funeral service will be held at the Manjummal Carmelite Ashram on Monday at 3:00 PM.
