WASHINGTON: Following a warning by Donald Trump that Iran could be destroyed overnight, the United States has intensified its attacks on Iran. Airstrikes were carried out on military bases in Kharg Island and in several locations in Tehran. The action came after the deadline given to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz expired. The US clarified that it has not targeted Iran’s oil refineries or storage facilities.
Meanwhile, Israel attacked a railway bridge in Kashan, Iran, killing two people. The Yahya Abad bridge and 10 railway tracks were destroyed. Large explosions were reported in Tehran and other cities. A cargo ship was also attacked. In Istanbul, three people were killed in a shooting at the Israeli consulate. Iran has also intensified its attacks, including in Gulf countries. The United Arab Emirates said its air defence systems are ready to counter any threats from Iran.
Trump had earlier issued a warning against Iran by stating that "a whole civilisation will die tonight" if Iran did not accept his deal and reopened the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded strongly, saying that even Alexander the Great and the Mongol armies could not destroy them. Iran also criticised Trump, calling him mentally unstable, but said it is open to negotiations if the US is willing.
At the United Nations Security Council, a resolution introduced by Bahrain demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was vetoed by Russia and China. Eleven countries supported the resolution.
Advisory for Indians in Iran
The Indian government has advised its citizens in Iran not to step outside for the next 48 hours. The Indian Embassy in Iran has asked them to remain where they are and stay indoors. People have also been warned to avoid areas near power plants, military bases, and the upper floors of high-rise buildings.
Iran may move to close Bab-el-Mandeb Strait
After tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran is reportedly considering closing the Bab el-Mandeb, one of the world’s most important shipping routes. The strait lies between Yemen and African countries like Djibouti and Eritrea, connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Nearly 10% of global shipping passes through this route, and its closure could significantly impact countries like India.
“14 million Iranian citizens and I are ready to give our lives for the country.”
