PALAKKAD: A major ganja haul in Walayar. The excise team seized 165 kg of ganja which was being smuggled in a lorry. Naufal, Fazil and Shahid, all of Tirur, were arrested in connection with the incident. It was seized during a search conducted following secret information. It is not clear from where it was brought. The detainees are being questioned in detail. The excise team said the seized cannabis is worth lakhs in the market.

The excise team had nabbed two persons with 188 kg of cannabis smuggled in a car near Walayar Toll Plaza in February. Weapons were also seized from two of their cars. Drug trafficking to Kerala has been rampant recently. These include cannabis and deadly drugs. Most of the cannabis in the state comes from Andhra Pradesh and elsewhere. Youths are the most involved in the smuggling. Carriers are often the only ones caught. It is the desire to get rich quickly that drives youths into it.
