THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 14-year-old girl committed suicide after her mother forbade her to use a mobile phone. P Devika, daughter of late Praveen and Gopika, of Puthenveedu in Karamana Nedungkadu, committed suicide at home. The incident took place on Saturday evening.

Devika's father Praveen died of an illness a year ago. Devika then used her father's phone. Her mother Gopika, an employee of a private event management, scolded her for using the phone too much. On the day of the incident, after taking back Devika's phone at noon, her mother told her that she would not give it to her anymore and that she should go and study. Then Devika went to her friend's house nearby and expressed her grief, but no one thought she would do the extreme.

At around 7.30 pm, her mother found Devika dead in her room. She was rushed to a private hospital in Karamana and later to the Medical College Hospital but she had already died. Devika, who excelled in her studies, was studying by staying at the school hostel. Vaiga is her sister. Gopika's mother Sobha also lives with them. Funeral was held.
