KOTTAYAM: NSS General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair has praised Shashi Tharoor who is now emerging as a mass leader in the Congress party in Kerala. Sukumaran Nair said that Shashi Tharoor is a global citizen and the son of Kerala. He praised Tharoor during his thanksgiving speech at the Mannam Jayanthi celebration at Perunna.

Sukumaran Nair also said that it was a mistake from his part when he called Tharoor ‘Delhi Nair’ at an earlier time. The NSS General Secretary said that Tharoor was invited to rectify this mistake. He also added that there was no one else as deserving as Shashi Tharoor.

G Sukumaran Nair had made fun of Tharoor by calling him ‘Delhi Nair’ when Tharoor came to Thiruvananthapuram to contest as MP for the first time. He also said that Tharoor’s candidature must not be included in the Nair quota.

Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor’s speech was aimed at opposition leader VD Satheesan. In his speech, he said that organizing Nairs were difficult and quoted Mannath Padmanabhan’s saying that one Nair do not like another Nair eighty years ago. Tharoor said that he is suffering from that time to time in politics. He also compared Sukumaran Nair’s work with Mannath and appreciated the equal distance policy of the NSS. His speech went on for one hour and twenty minutes. Twenty-thousand-strong Karayogam members at the venue clapped heartily to Tharoor’s speech.

After AK Antony was invited to Mannam Jayanthi, ten years ago, no Congress leaders were invited there. After a long gap, Shashi Tharoor was invited to inaugurate the function.

Ramesh Chennithala had left the venue before Shashi Tharoor had reached there. VD Satheesan chose not to attend the function altogether. The other Congress leaders in the crowd were Kodikunnil Suresh, MK Raghavan, K Muralidharan, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, and VS Sivakumar.
