Golden double: Asmita, Harsh Singh power India to judo glory at Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW: India struck gold in judo at the Commonwealth Games, with Asmita Dey winning the women’s 48kg category and Harsh Singh claiming the men’s 60kg gold. India’s Yamini Maurya has also reached the final of the women’s 57kg category.

Asmita defeated Canada’s Haity Quach 2-1 in a closely fought final to win the gold. She became the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games. Harsh won his gold after defeating Australia’s Joshua Katz 10-0 in the final.

India had 10 semifinal bouts in boxing. Of the first five bouts to be completed, Indian boxers won all five and advanced to the finals. The finals will be held on Saturday.

Seema wins bronze

India’s Seema Kaliramna won the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw. Seema, a PhD holder and mother of a four-year-old child, secured the bronze with a throw of 58.65 metres.
