CAPE TOWN: South African midfielder Jayden Adams has been found dead at his home in Cape Town, just days after the national team was eliminated from the football World Cup. He was 25 years old.

The player was discovered dead on Saturday morning. The exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed. While the South African police have launched a formal investigation into the incident, the player's family has not yet issued a statement or commented on the tragedy.

The sudden demise comes shortly after South Africa's World Cup campaign concluded with a defeat against Canada in the Round of 32. Adams had played a key role for his country during the tournament, featuring in the opening match and stepping onto the pitch for all three of South Africa's group-stage fixtures.

During the tournament, Adams faced severe personal adversity when his grandmother passed away just as he was preparing for South Africa's second group-stage match against Czechia. The midfielder was informed of the bereavement prior to the kickoff of that match.

Only a day before he was found dead, Adams had shared a photograph with his girlfriend, Akeela, on his social media accounts. A rising talent in the national setup, Adams was also a member of the South African squad that put on an impressive display to reach the semifinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
