NEW DELHI: India delivered an outstanding performance on Day 13 of the Asian Games, securing several major achievements. In boxing, Parveen Hooda clinched gold in the women’s 65 kg category, while Ankush Panghal in the men’s 80 kg category. India won three gold medals in boxing on a single day.
With Sujeet also winning gold in wrestling, India’s overall gold medal tally rose to 15. This marked the first time in Asian Games history that two Indian women boxers won gold medals in the same edition of the tournament. Earlier, Lovlina Borgohain had won gold in the women’s 75 kg category.
India also created history in women’s recurve team archery. The Indian team, comprising Ankita Bhakat, Kirti, and Kumkum Mohanta, defeated South Korea to win the country’s first-ever Asian Games gold medal in the event. India achieved this feat by overcoming South Korea, the reigning Paris Olympics champions. With these victories, India moved up to fifth place in the medals table.
Lovlina Borgohain secured her gold medal by defeating China’s Bao Siyi in the women’s 75 kg boxing final. It was Lovlina’s first-ever Asian Games medal, and she became only the second Indian woman after Mary Kom to win a gold medal in Asian Games boxing. Mary Kom had first achieved this feat for India in 2014.
