405 on board, 223 from Gill: India turn a daunting chase into a rout

GUWAHATI: West Indies had piled up a daunting 405 for seven, but India turned the chase into a breathtaking batting display. Captain Shubman Gill smashed a record-breaking double century as India raced to 406 for two in just 43.3 overs to complete an eight-wicket victory in the second ODI.

Gill finished unbeaten on 223, producing an innings that combined remarkable control with relentless aggression. He struck 24 fours and seven sixes and became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to register multiple double centuries in ODI cricket. He also set a new record for the fastest ODI double century, reaching the landmark in just 117 balls.

At the other end, Rohit Sharma set the tone with a superb 101 off 75 balls. The opener struck 10 fours and six sixes and completed 12,000 ODI runs during his innings, joining an elite group of batters to reach the landmark.

Gill and Rohit put India firmly in control with a 255-run opening partnership before Rohit fell. The dismissal did little to slow India's charge.

Virat Kohli briefly kept the momentum going before he was dismissed for 29 off 19 balls, but by then India were well ahead of the required rate. Gill continued his assault and, alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, took India over the line with 39 balls to spare.

Earlier, West Indies had produced a formidable total of their own. John Campbell (101), Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114) all hit centuries as the visitors posted 405 for seven, their highest ODI total. It was also the first time West Indies had three centurions in the same ODI innings.

The target of 406 looked imposing on paper. Gill and India's top order, however, made it look remarkably ordinary. What began as a daunting chase ended in a commanding victory, with Gill providing the defining performance of the night.
