Vaibhav breaks 57-year-old record but misses another milestone by eight runs

BENGALURU: Young Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has entered the record books with a half-century in the Duleep Trophy. The East Zone batter became the youngest player to score a fifty in the tournament, breaking a 57-year-old record.

Vaibhav achieved the feat in the semi-final against Central Zone. He reached his half-century in just 42 balls, doing so at the age of 15 years and 175 days.

He broke the record held by Laxman Singh, who scored a half-century in the Duleep Trophy in 1969 at the age of 16 years and 23 days. Piyush Chawla, who scored a fifty at 16 years and 307 days in 2005, is third on the list.

Vaibhav then came close to another major record but fell eight runs short of a century. He scored 92 runs off 81 balls. Had he scored eight more runs, he would have broken Sachin Tendulkar's 36-year-old record for the youngest century in the Duleep Trophy.

Vaibhav's innings included seven fours and seven sixes. Opening alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran, he also put together a 162-run opening partnership, giving East Zone a strong start.
