TEHRAN: Iran has announced a three-day funeral for Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran. Tehran deputy mayor Mohammad Amin Tavakoli-Zadeh outlined the official arrangements for the commemoration events to be held in multiple cities. The announcement said the commemoration events will be held in several major urban centers, including Tehran, as well as in the religious centers of Qom and Mashhad, as scheduled.
This will be one of the largest mourning processions the country has ever seen. About 20 million people are expected to attend the memorial services of the spiritual leader Khamenei. Although the date of the mourning procession has not been announced, the services will coincide with Muharram, which is important for the Shia sect. If so, the mourning procession will be in the middle of this month. Khamenei was killed on February 28, 2026. Iran is making arrangements for the mourning procession three months after the incident. No information has been released about where his body is kept.
There have been incidents of attacks even on the graves of slain leaders. So, the place where Khamenei is being laid to rest is of great importance. It is expected that the burial will be in Mashhad. It is reported that arrangements for the mourning procession are being made in view of the favorable situation in the context of the expected peace talks with the United States.
