TEHRAN: Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz, shortly after reopening it following the signing of a peace agreement. The move was taken in protest against an Israeli attack in Lebanon. More than 20 people were killed in the Israeli attack in Lebanon. The ceasefire agreement signed between Iran and the United States has also come under pressure following the alleged violation of the truce. Under the agreement, Iran had agreed to waive fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days.
Meanwhile, US Vice President J.D. Vance said that he believes the agreement will continue. He also said there was no evidence that Iran had closed the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson had earlier said that Iran had followed the terms of the agreement. News agencies reported that an Iranian delegation would travel to Switzerland for further discussions on the deal. The Iranian Foreign Ministry also said that the United States has a responsibility to pressure Israel to stop the attacks in Lebanon.
According to Lebanon’s official news agency NNA, Israeli fighter jets and drones carried out continuous attacks in the Nabatieh region of Lebanon hours after the ceasefire came into effect. Reports said that buildings and houses were damaged in the attacks.
