After a relatively quiet period for nostalgic theatrical runs, the Malayalam re-release market is gearing up for a spectacular revival. Leading the charge is the 4K Dolby Atmos restoration of Sibi Malayil’s immortal classic Kireedam, scheduled to hit screens on July 10, 2026.

However, what has truly sent a wave of excitement through cinephiles is the subsequent lineup. Spearheaded by the restoration hub Matinee Now, the upcoming slate forms an accidental, yet glorious tribute to one master filmmaker: Priyadarshan. Out of the five major blockbusters preparing for a grand theatrical comeback, four are legendary directorials by the veteran hitmaker.

Master of frames: Priyadarshan quadrant

While Kireedam sets the stage with pure emotional gravity, the upcoming roster belongs heavily to the colourful, visually spectacular world of Priyadarshan. Fans are pointing out that watching these specific films back on the big screen isn't just about nostalgia—it's about experiencing peak celluloid craftsmanship in high definition.

1. Thenmavin Kombath (1994)

  • The Hype: Widely considered a visual textbook for cinematography, this Mohanlal-Shobana starrer won two National Film Awards, including one for the late, legendary cinematographer K.V. Anand.
  • The Big Screen Appeal: The vivid, rustic colour palettes of "Manikyan" and "Karthumbi’s" world, paired with the iconic soundtrack by Berny-Ignatius, are tailor-made for a remastered 4K theatrical experience.

2. Kaalapani (1996)

  • The Hype: This magnum opus redefined the scale of Malayalam cinema in the 90s. Exploring the horrors of the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, the film originally won four National Film Awards.
  • The Big Screen Appeal: Shot by Santosh Sivan with a hauntingly brilliant score by Ilaiyaraaja, Kaalapani is a cinematic spectacle that demands the immersive audio-visual depth of modern premium theatres.

3. Kakkayuyil (2001)

  • The Hype: A chaotic, laugh-a-minute comedy ride featuring the unmatched comic timing of Mohanlal and Mukesh.
  • The Big Screen Appeal: Priyadarshan's signature slapstick sequences and massive ensemble situational comedy remain a crowd-pleasing, collective theatre-laughing experience.

4. Vettam (2004)

  • The Hype: Breaking the Mohanlal streak in the lineup is the Dileep-starrer Vettam. Despite a lukewarm response during its initial release, the film has attained a massive, unshakeable cult status through television and streaming.
  • The Big Screen Appeal: Known as one of the ultimate "comfort films" for Malayalis, the climax hotel sequence—a masterclass in comedy of errors—will finally get the grand theatrical celebration its fans have championed for two decades.

Setting the stage: 'Kireedam' heavyweight

Before the Priyadarshan carnival begins, Sibi Malayil’s Kireedam (1989) will officially open the floodgates on July 10. Restored meticulously by NFDC-NFAI from a surviving 35mm print after the original camera negatives had decomposed, the film brings the tragic story of Sethumadhavan (Mohanlal) and Achuthan Nair (Thilakan) to the new generation. Interestingly, social media is already buzzing with vintage film fans jokingly pleading on forums: "Can you please use 4K technology to change that heartbreaking climax?"

Reviving a sluggish re-release market

The sudden influx of these mammoth titles comes at a crucial time. While the previous three years saw a golden run for re-releases—with movies like Spadikam 4K and Devadoothan 4K raking in multi-crore figures—2026 has been noticeably dry.

Thus far, only Mohanlal’s action-thriller Run Baby Run made it to theatres, receiving a lukewarm reception. Although not a Malayalam movie, the grand reception for the dubbed version of Allu Arjun’s Happy (Happy Be Happy) was a relief. With Matinee Now putting its weight behind cinematic milestones like Kireedam, Kaalapani, and Thenmavin Kombath, the trade is highly optimistic that family audiences and youth cohorts will storm back to the cinemas to witness history in 4K.
